Controlling Humidity in Winter: Practical Tips

Updated: Jan 24

Winters in Budapest are often accompanied by difficult climatic conditions, marked by cold and persistent humidity, which can sometimes even enter our apartments. The buildings in our charming city of Budapest, rich in history, are often old, and it is not uncommon to notice some traces of humidity in certain rooms of the apartments. As the manager of your home, Story's Immobilier Budapest is here to support you and help you resolve these problems, in particular by identifying the origin of the humidity, whether it is a water leak or water damage. However, before undertaking expensive and time-consuming work, several simple reflexes can be adopted, and various preventive actions can be put in place.

  • Air your home every morning and evening : open all windows simultaneously for 10 to 15 minutes.

  • Cool Your Jets : Hot and long showers, while relaxing, can introduce a lot of humidity into an environment. Colder and shorter showers will decrease the amount of steam in the air and thus, humidity levels overall.

  • Wipe walls and windows regularly to prevent moisture buildup.

  • Get some plants : Houseplants release moisture into the air, so if you have a lot of them, they could be contributing to the humidity of your home.

  • Use Baking Soda : Baking soda is a highly effective moisture absorber. Position bowls filled with it in areas of your home with elevated humidity levels. For more compact spaces, baking soda works best, while for larger areas, consider using charcoal or rock salt.

  • Use Charcoal : Charcoal will suck the moisture out of the air and absorb it. Simply place a few briquettes in a container like a basket or a can and replace them every couple of months.

  • Use a dehumidifier (Amazon link) : Available online or at your local home goods store, a humidity monitor will allow you to check the moisture levels of the air in your home so that you have a better sense of what you’re dealing with.

  • If stains appear, clean the walls with white vinegar.
